The KENNAMETAL 4171836 is a solid carbide turning insert carrying industry standard designation SNMG432FP in the KCU10 grade. It features a TiAlN coating applied via PVD process, which provides heat and wear resistance during interrupted and continuous cuts in demanding materials. The insert has a 90-degree square shape with a 0.5-inch inscribed circle, a 0.1875-inch thickness, and a 0.0313-inch corner radius. With 8 cutting edges and a negative rake geometry, it delivers consistent tool life across turning, facing, and boring operations. Honed cutting edges reduce micro-chipping when entering the cut. Licensed machinists and CNC lathe operators working in production environments are the primary users.
This insert is suited for turning, facing, and boring operations on steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium — workpiece material codes P, M, and S under ISO classification. It is part of the KENLOC series and is designed for high-performance metal removal in both roughing and finishing passes where a square insert geometry and multi-edge economy are required. The maximum depth of cut is 0.1665 inches. Applications span general-purpose production turning on CNC lathes and manual engine lathes in job shops, aerospace, and heavy-equipment manufacturing environments.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement for SNMG432FP-style insert pockets using clamp-and-pin holding systems. ISO equivalent designation is SNMG120408FP. Conforms to both ANSI and ISO insert standards. Material grade classifications C3 and C4 apply.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians. Before indexing or replacing the insert, disengage the spindle drive and confirm the machine is in a safe, locked-out state per applicable machine-specific lockout/tagout procedures. Seat the insert fully into the pocket and confirm the clamp and pin are secure before resuming cuts. Do not exceed the maximum depth of cut specification for this insert geometry.
