The KENNAMETAL 4171827 is a solid carbide turning insert in the DNMG431FP geometry, manufactured under the KENLOC series and graded KCU10. It carries a TiAlN coating applied via PVD process, which provides thermal resistance and edge wear protection during interrupted and continuous cuts. The insert features a 55-degree diamond shape with a neutral hand orientation, a 1/2-inch inscribed circle, and a 1/64-inch corner radius. With four cutting edges and a honed cutting edge style, the 4171827 is suited for general turning operations where consistent tool life across steel and difficult alloys is required. Licensed HVAC and trade professionals working in precision environments will recognize this as a multi-application indexable insert.
This insert is designed for use in turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring operations. Primary workpiece materials include steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium, corresponding to ISO material groups P, M, and S. The negative rake geometry and FP chip breaker designation make it appropriate for both roughing and semi-finishing passes in production and job-shop environments where chip control across varying feed rates is critical.
Designed for use in KENLOC-style toolholders that accept DNMG-style inserts with clamp and pin holding methods. Compatible with applications targeting ISO material groups P (steel), M (stainless steel), and S (superalloys and titanium). Maximum depth of cut is 0.4065 inches. Material grades C3 and C4 apply.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following the toolholder manufacturer's clamping torque and seating procedures. Power down the machine and engage all machine locks before indexing or replacing inserts. Inspect the toolholder pocket and locating pin for debris or wear before seating a new insert. Do not use inserts with visible edge damage, as chipped or cracked carbide can cause workpiece damage or machine hazard.
