The KENNAMETAL 4146453 is a ceramic turning insert in the KENDEX series, designed for high-speed material removal on superalloys and titanium. It carries the industry standard designation SNG644T0420 and is manufactured to a KYS30 SiAlON ceramic grade, which delivers moderate wear resistance and toughness in demanding S-category workpiece applications. The insert features a 3/4 inch inscribed circle, a 1/4 inch thickness, a 1/16 inch corner radius, and a flat-top chip breaker geometry with a T-Land cutting edge. The negative rake and negative side clearance geometry are engineered for rigidity under the high cutting forces typical of nickel-base and titanium alloys.
This insert is suited for turning, facing, and boring operations on superalloys and titanium in aerospace, power generation, and industrial machining environments. The square SNG insert shape provides eight available cutting edges, improving cost-per-edge economics on production runs. The uncoated SiAlON ceramic construction performs at elevated cutting speeds where carbide grades lose thermal stability. It is intended for use in rigid setups with appropriate SNG-style clamp toolholders operating at parameters recommended for ceramic grades in S-category materials.
Designed for use in SNG-style clamp toolholders compatible with the SNG644 insert size. Suitable for turning, facing, and boring of superalloys and titanium workpieces per ANSI insert code SNG644 and ISO insert code SNG190616.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians using SNG clamp-style toolholders. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the toolholder is properly seated and torqued before indexing or replacing the insert. Ceramic inserts require rigid machine setups and are sensitive to interrupted cuts and vibration — verify setup stability before engaging the workpiece. Follow the tooling manufacturer's recommended cutting parameters for SiAlON ceramic grades when operating on superalloys or titanium.
