The KENNAMETAL 4132020 is a bottoming-style thread forming tap designed for 4-40 UNC internal threads in steel workpieces. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than remove it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear from blind holes. This tap is manufactured from vanadium high-speed steel (HSS-E) and coated with TiCN for improved wear resistance and surface hardness. With an overall length of 1.875 inches and a thread length of 0.3125 inches, it is sized for compact fastener applications. Thread limit is H3. Machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance technicians install this tap in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping machines.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading in steel at the 4-40 UNC thread size, a common fastener spec in instrument panels, electronics enclosures, small mechanical assemblies, and precision fabrication work. The bottoming chamfer with 1.5 to 2 chamfered threads allows the tap to form threads close to the bottom of a blind hole, maximizing thread engagement in shallow-depth applications. Right-hand thread direction follows standard UNC convention. The TiCN coating extends tool life in ferrous materials and reduces galling during the forming process.
Designed for blind hole threading in steel workpieces at the 4-40 UNC thread standard. Intended for use in CNC tapping, drill press, and hand-tapping applications where a bottoming-style forming tap is required at this thread size. Suitable for material application code P (steel).
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill - the recommended hole diameter differs from standard cut-tap drill charts, so consult a forming tap drill chart before drilling the pilot hole. Power down or de-energize any machine spindle before loading or unloading the tap. Use appropriate tapping fluid rated for steel to reduce forming forces and extend tool life. Inspect the tap for wear or galling before each use, as a damaged forming tap can seize in a blind hole.
