The KENNAMETAL 4131742 is a 4-40 UNC straight-flute hand tap designed for cutting right-hand internal threads in a range of ferrous materials. Built from high-speed steel with a TiCN (titanium carbonitride) coating, it delivers improved surface hardness and wear resistance compared to uncoated HSS taps. The plug chamfer provides a gradual thread lead-in, making it well suited for through-hole applications. With a thread limit of H2 and a class of fit of 2B/3B, this tap produces threads within the standard tolerance range for general-purpose UNC fastener assemblies. Overall length is 1.875 inches with a thread length of 0.563 inches. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals use this tap for hand-tapping operations in production and maintenance environments.
This tap is intended for threading 4-40 UNC holes in cast iron, stainless steel, and steel workpieces. The 2-flute straight-flute geometry clears chips from through-holes and works effectively in hand-tapping fixtures or T-handle tap wrenches. Series 8013 from KENNAMETAL is a standard-style tap line sized for small-diameter thread work common in precision fabrication, toolroom operations, and light manufacturing. The TiCN coating extends tool life when working in abrasive or harder steel grades.
Designed for cutting 4-40 UNC right-hand internal threads; rated for material applications including cast iron, stainless steel, and steel as specified by the manufacturer.
This tap is installed and operated by machinists or toolroom professionals using a T-handle tap wrench or tapping fixture. Before tapping, ensure the drilled hole is at the correct tap-drill diameter for a 4-40 UNC thread and that the workpiece is securely clamped. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material, particularly when working with stainless steel, to reduce heat buildup and extend tap life. Inspect the tap for chipping or wear before each use and never force a tap that has seized in the hole.
