The KENNAMETAL 4131432 is a 5/8-11 UNC straight-flute hand tap designed for cutting internal threads in ferrous and stainless workpieces. Built from high-speed steel (HSS) with a titanium carbonitride (TiCN) coating, it delivers extended tool life and improved wear resistance compared to uncoated taps. The plug chamfer (3-5 thread lead) makes it suitable for through-hole tapping where the tap can advance progressively into the material. At 3-13/16 inches overall length with a 1-13/16 inch thread length, this 4-flute tap produces a Class 3B fit to H3 thread limit, meeting close-tolerance threading requirements in production and repair work.
This tap is intended for hand tapping or low-speed machine tapping operations in cast iron, stainless steel, and carbon steel. The straight-flute configuration works best in through holes where chip evacuation is managed by the operator or cutting fluid flow. The TiCN coating reduces friction and galling, which is particularly useful when threading stainless steel. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians across manufacturing, fabrication, and MRO environments will find this tap well suited for 5/8-11 UNC thread production.
Designed for cutting 5/8-11 UNC internal threads in cast iron, stainless steel, and steel workpieces. Suitable for use with standard tap handles and tapping heads configured for straight-shank tooling with a 0.480-inch shank diameter.
Hand taps should be installed and operated by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician familiar with thread-cutting procedures. Always secure the workpiece and use proper tapping fluid appropriate for the material being threaded, particularly when working with stainless steel. Back the tap off periodically to break and clear chips, preventing tap breakage in blind or deep holes. Verify the correct drill size for 5/8-11 UNC prior to tapping, and inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use.
