The KENNAMETAL 4131164 is a spiral point plug tap designed for threading 1/4-20 UNC right-hand threads in a wide range of metalworking applications. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with a bright, uncoated finish, this 2-flute tap pushes chips forward ahead of the cutting zone, making it well suited for through-hole tapping operations. It carries an H11 thread limit and is noted as oversize by 0.0050 inches, which accounts for material spring-back in harder alloys. With an overall length of 2.5 inches and a thread length of 1.0 inch, it fits standard tap holders and machine spindles used in production and repair environments.
This tap is engineered for use in cast iron, ductile iron, non-ferrous metals, stainless steel, and carbon and alloy steels. It is a practical choice for CNC machining centers, drill presses, and hand tapping setups where through-hole thread production is required. The plug chamfer style — with a standard lead of 3 to 5 threads — provides a balance between easy thread entry and thread form accuracy, making it appropriate for both machine and hand tapping in general metalworking and maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) settings.
Designed for threading 1/4-20 UNC through holes in cast iron, ductile iron, non-ferrous metals, stainless steel, and steel. Compatible with standard 1/4 inch tap holders, T-handle wrenches, and machine spindle adapters used in general metalworking and machining operations.
This tap should be installed and operated by a qualified machinist or tradesperson familiar with threading operations and applicable shop safety practices. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the spindle or tap holder is properly aligned before engagement. Use an appropriate cutting fluid or tapping oil matched to the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve thread quality. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use and replace if thread form quality degrades.
