The KENNAMETAL 4109788 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision external grooving operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Built to the NG3088 geometry in the Top Notch series, this left-hand insert features an AlTiN (aluminum titanium nitride) PVD coating that improves heat resistance and tool life in demanding cutting conditions. The cutting width measures 2.24 mm (0.0882 inches) with a maximum depth of cut of 2.39 mm (0.0941 inches). A corner radius of 0.19 mm (0.0075 inches) provides a controlled edge form for consistent groove geometry. This insert is intended for use by machinists and toolroom professionals on production turning equipment.
This insert is suited for light to medium grooving applications where tight groove width control is required. The Top Notch series clamp-held insert system is commonly found on CNC turning centers handling shaft, sleeve, and ring components across metalworking, aerospace, and general machining environments. The KCU25 grade with AlTiN PVD coating is appropriate for a range of ferrous and non-ferrous workpiece materials where coating durability and edge retention matter. Left-hand orientation makes this insert suitable for specific toolholder configurations that require cutting from right to left relative to the workpiece.
Designed for use with Top Notch series clamp-style toolholders accepting NG3088 insert size. The MSC/Manufacturer cross-reference number is NG3088R/L. Verify toolholder insert pocket geometry and hand orientation before installation.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following the machine tool manufacturer guidelines for insert seating and clamp torque. Power down and lock out the turning center before changing inserts. Ensure the insert pocket and clamp are free of chips and debris before seating the insert, as contamination can cause improper seating and premature edge failure. Do not exceed the maximum depth of cut specification for this insert geometry.
