The KENNAMETAL 4109658 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision external grooving and turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Manufactured to the NFD4189K insert style in the Top Notch series, this insert features a KCU25 grade substrate with a PVD-applied AlTiN coating, making it well suited for interrupted cuts and materials prone to built-up edge. The cutting width measures 4.80 mm (0.1890 inches) with a maximum depth of cut of 9.53 mm (0.3752 inches). A K-style chip breaker and a 12-degree rake angle promote controlled chip flow. A clamp-style insert holding method ensures rigid, repeatable seating in compatible Top Notch toolholders. This insert is sold individually and is intended for use by machining professionals and CNC operators.
This insert is appropriate for grooving, parting, and profiling operations in high-production and job-shop turning environments. The AlTiN coating performs well at elevated cutting temperatures, extending tool life in ferrous and hardened materials. The right-hand cutting orientation suits standard lathe setups where the tool approaches the workpiece from the right. The Top Notch series is a widely used platform in production turning, and this insert fits that established toolholder system. Minimum order quantity is 5 units; each package contains 1 insert.
Designed for use in Top Notch series clamp-style grooving toolholders accepting insert seat size 4 and insert style NFD. Manufacturer cross-reference number NFD4189R/LK.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator with the machine fully stopped and energy isolated per lockout/tagout procedures. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping screw for wear or debris before seating the insert. Use the correct torque driver for the clamp screw as specified by the toolholder manufacturer documentation — do not overtighten. Confirm insert orientation and depth-stop engagement before resuming cutting operations.
