The KENNAMETAL 4109654 is a solid carbide grooving insert in the Top Notch series, designed for external grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries a KCU25 grade designation with a PVD-applied AlTiN coating, delivering heat and wear resistance suited to interrupted cuts and moderate to high cutting speeds. The insert features a right-hand orientation, a 3.18 mm (0.1252 inch) cutting width, and a maximum depth of cut of 6.35 mm (0.2500 inch). With a 12-degree rake angle and K-style chip breaker, it promotes controlled chip evacuation in steel and cast iron applications. Machinists and CNC tool setters working in production turning environments are the primary installers.
This insert is intended for use in Top Notch series grooving toolholders that accept NFD-style inserts with clamp-style holding. It suits metric-preference setups and is applicable across a depth-of-cut range of 5.00 mm to 10.00 mm, making it appropriate for medium-depth groove profiles. Typical applications include external grooving, undercut machining, and snap-ring groove cutting on turned components in both job-shop and production environments. The 55-degree included angle geometry and 0.19 mm (0.0075 inch) corner radius suit profiles requiring controlled geometry with a near-sharp nose.
Designed for use in Top Notch series clamp-style grooving toolholders accepting NFD insert style. Manufacturer cross-reference number is NFD3125R/LKI.
Installation should be performed by a qualified CNC machinist or tooling technician with the machine in a powered-off, locked-out state. Seat the insert fully into the toolholder pocket before engaging the clamp, and verify clamp screw torque per the toolholder manufacturer specification. Inspect the insert seat and clamp for chips or debris before mounting to ensure proper contact and prevent insert rocking. Replace the insert at first signs of flank wear, edge chipping, or surface finish degradation on the workpiece.
