The KENNAMETAL 4109653 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision external grooving operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Built to the NFD insert style within the Top Notch series, this right-hand insert features a cutting width of 0.125 inches (3.18 mm) and a maximum depth of cut of 0.250 inches (6.35 mm). The KCU25 grade substrate is coated with AlTiN via a PVD process, delivering heat resistance and edge durability when cutting steels, cast irons, and similar materials at moderate to high speeds. The clamp-style holding method provides rigid insert retention during interrupted cuts and high-feed passes. Installed by machinists and CNC operators in production turning environments.
This insert is suited for grooving applications in both production and job-shop turning operations. The single-end configuration and size 3 insert seat make it compatible with Top Notch series grooving toolholders requiring an NFD-style seat. Typical applications include external groove profiling, undercut operations, and plunge grooving on ferrous workpieces. The 55-degree included angle and 12-degree rake angle support chip control across a range of feed rates. The K-style chip breaker manages chip flow in medium-to-finish grooving passes.
Designed for use in Top Notch series grooving toolholders accepting NFD-style inserts at insert seat size 3. The MSC and manufacturer cross-reference number is NFD3125R/LK.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator with the machine spindle fully stopped and all motion axes locked out per the machine tool manufacturer lockout/tagout procedure. Use the appropriate clamp and seat hardware specified for the Top Notch insert seat size 3 to ensure proper insert retention and repeatability. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping components for wear or debris before seating a new insert. Do not exceed the maximum depth of cut range specified for this insert to avoid premature edge failure or insert fracture.
