The KENNAMETAL 4053408 is a solid carbide turning insert carrying the ANSI designation RNMG43RN and ISO designation RNMG120400RN, manufactured under the KENLOC series and finished with a PVD-applied TiAlN (AlTiN) coating. The insert features a full-radius round shape with an inscribed circle of 0.5 inches and a thickness of 0.1875 inches, delivering 8 usable cutting edges per insert. The KCU10 grade is engineered for high wear resistance to moderate wear resistance and toughness, making it a direct choice for roughing and medium machining operations on steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and superalloys and titanium. It is installed by machinists and CNC turning specialists on lathes and turning centers.
This insert is suited for lathe-based operations including turning, facing, and boring on a range of workpiece materials identified under ISO material codes P, M, K, N, S, and H. The round insert geometry provides continuous cutting edge availability and equal load distribution, which is particularly advantageous in interrupted-cut conditions and when profile turning with variable engagement angles. The RN chip breaker geometry is optimized for roughing and medium material removal rates. Typical applications include general turning on steel and stainless steel components in job shop and production machining environments.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement insert conforming to ANSI size code 43 and ISO size code 120400, compatible with KENLOC-series toolholders and any standard RNMG-style insert pocket accepting a 0.5-inch inscribed circle round insert with a 0.2031-inch hole diameter.
Installation is performed by machinists using the appropriate RNMG-compatible toolholder with clamp or pin retention. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out before seating or indexing the insert. Confirm the insert pocket and clamping surfaces are clean and free of chips before torquing the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specified value. Maximum depth of cut should not exceed 0.1665 inches per the insert geometry limits.
