The KENNAMETAL 4050778 is a solid carbide turning insert in the KENDEX series, designated by ANSI code TPG431 and ISO code TPG220404. It features a physical vapor deposition (PVD)-applied AlTiN (TiAlN) coating engineered for high wear resistance across a range of workpiece materials. The triangular insert shape provides three usable cutting edges, a 0.5 inch inscribed circle, a 1/64 inch (0.0156 inch) corner radius, and an 11-degree relief angle with positive rake geometry. Maximum depth of cut reaches 0.2884 inches. The flat-top chip breaker design and honed cutting edge style suit finishing to medium-roughing turning operations. Licensed machinists and CNC turning specialists are the primary installers and users.
This insert is rated for turning, facing, and boring operations on steel (P), stainless steel (M), cast iron (K), aluminum and non-ferrous materials (N), superalloys and titanium (S), and hardened materials (H). The KCU10 grade delivers high to moderate wear resistance with adequate toughness for interrupted and continuous cuts on these material groups. It seats in a top-clamp (clamp-style) insert holder accepting TPG-style inserts. The KENDEX series is a multi-use line suited to general-purpose turning centers in production and job-shop environments.
Designed for use in clamp-style (top-clamp) toolholders that accept TPG-style triangular inserts per ANSI size code 431 and ISO size code 220404. Suitable for turning, facing, and boring applications on steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum, superalloys, and titanium workpieces.
Insert seating and clamping should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the toolholder is secured before replacing an insert. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping mechanism for wear or debris before seating the new insert. Follow the toolholder manufacturer's clamping torque specifications and applicable shop safety procedures when indexing or replacing cutting inserts.
