The KENNAMETAL 4050689 is a CNMG432RP turning insert in the KCU10 grade, designed for high-performance metal cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. The insert features a solid carbide substrate with a PVD-applied TiAlN coating for wear resistance and thermal stability at elevated cutting speeds. The 80-degree diamond shape provides a strong cutting edge geometry with a negative rake angle and chamfered-and-honed edge prep. With a 0.5-inch inscribed circle and a 0.03125-inch corner radius, this insert is suited for general turning, facing, and boring applications across a wide range of ferrous and exotic workpiece materials. It ships individually but must be ordered in multiples of five.
This insert is optimized for primary use on steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium, corresponding to ISO material groups P, M, and S. Secondary applications include cast iron, non-ferrous metals, and additional steel variants (ISO groups K and N). Typical applications include roughing to semi-finishing passes in turning and facing operations on manual and CNC lathes, as well as boring bar setups where an 80-degree diamond insert provides adequate clearance. The RP chip breaker geometry assists with chip control across a broad depth-of-cut range up to 0.169 inches.
Designed for use in CNMG432-compatible toolholders from the KENNAMETAL KENLOC series and equivalent ANSI- and ISO-standard holders accepting CNMG120408 inserts. Compatible workpiece materials include steel, stainless steel, superalloys, titanium, cast iron, and non-ferrous metals per ISO material codes P, M, S, K, and N.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Seat the insert fully against the pocket walls before tightening the clamp or pin to avoid micro-movement under cutting loads. Inspect the insert pocket and toolholder for chips or debris before seating a new edge, as contamination can cause premature edge failure or insert fracture.
