The KENNAMETAL 4048717 is a solid carbide square end mill engineered for demanding metal-removal applications. Designed with five flutes and a variable index geometry, it delivers improved chip evacuation and reduced chatter compared to standard 4-flute tools. The AlTiN coating provides high thermal resistance, making it well suited for dry or semi-dry cutting environments where heat generation is a concern. With a 0.3125-inch (5/16 inch) cutting diameter and a 0.75-inch length of cut, this single-end mill fits a wide range of slotting, profiling, and side-milling operations on machine centers and CNC mills. Material grade KCPM15 adds toughness and wear resistance for extended tool life. Licensed machinists and CNC operators are the primary installers of this tooling.
This end mill is built for use on steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and hardened materials, covering ISO material groups P, M, K, and H. It belongs to the UCDE series, which is optimized for high-performance peripheral milling on ferrous workpieces. The right-hand cut and right-hand spiral flute configuration is compatible with standard machine spindle rotation on vertical and horizontal machining centers. It is a single-end tool, so once the cutting end is worn, the tool is replaced rather than flipped. The 30-degree nominal helix angle (38-degree actual per spec) supports aggressive feed rates while maintaining surface finish quality.
Designed for use on steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and hardened materials (ISO groups P, M, K, H) in standard 5/16-inch collet or end mill holders on CNC machining centers. Part of the KENNAMETAL UCDE series.
Installation is performed by a licensed machinist or CNC operator. Secure the shank in a clean, properly sized collet or end mill holder and torque to the machine tool manufacturer's specification. This tool is not center-cutting — do not use for direct plunge entry into solid material without a pre-drilled hole or ramping strategy. Inspect the cutting edges for chipping or wear before each use and replace when edge condition degrades to avoid workpiece damage.
