The KENNAMETAL 4048683 is a solid carbide corner radius end mill designed for precision milling in demanding metal-cutting applications. It features a 1/4 inch cutting diameter, a 3/4 inch length of cut, and a 0.02 inch corner radius that reduces stress concentrations at the bottom of a cut and extends tool life in hardened or abrasive materials. The 2-1/2 inch overall length and 1/4 inch shank diameter make it compatible with standard collet and end mill holders. Three flutes at a coarse pitch provide a balance of chip evacuation and rigidity. AlTiN coating improves heat resistance and wear performance at elevated cutting speeds. This tool is installed by machinists and CNC operators in production and job shop environments.
The 4048683 is suited for slotting, profiling, and peripheral milling in ferrous and hardened materials, including alloy steels and cast iron, where corner protection and surface finish consistency are critical. The centercutting geometry allows plunge entry, giving the operator flexibility for ramping and pocket entry moves without a pre-drilled pilot hole. It belongs to Kennametal HPRSS series tooling, which targets high-performance roughing and semi-finishing operations in materials that generate significant heat at the cutting edge. A 30-degree helix angle supports smooth chip flow and reduced cutting force. This end mill is typically run on CNC vertical machining centers and multi-axis mills.
Part of the Kennametal HPRSS series. Designed as an OEM-specification solid carbide end mill for use in standard 1/4 inch collet chucks, end mill holders, and shrink-fit toolholders on CNC machining centers.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC setup technician. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is in a safe state before loading or unloading the tool. Seat the shank fully into the holder to the recommended engagement depth and torque the retention mechanism per the toolholder manufacturer specifications. Verify runout with a dial indicator before starting a production cut, as excessive runout accelerates edge wear on small-diameter solid carbide tools.
