The KENNAMETAL 4048643 is a solid carbide square end mill from the HPFSS series, designed for high-performance milling in demanding shop environments. Built with 5 spiral flutes and an AlTiN coating, it delivers efficient chip evacuation and thermal resistance during aggressive cuts. The 3/8 inch mill diameter pairs with a 3/8 inch shank and a 7/8 inch length of cut, giving machinists a compact, rigid tool suited for precision profiling and slotting. Material grade KCPM15 provides the substrate toughness required for hardened and difficult-to-machine workpieces. Installed by CNC machinists and tool-and-die professionals, this end mill is a direct-fit replacement for standard 3/8 inch toolholders in vertical and horizontal machining centers.
The 4048643 is engineered for milling steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and hardened materials, corresponding to ISO material codes P, M, K, and H. Its centercutting design allows plunge entry, expanding its usefulness in contouring and pocket-milling operations. The regular-length geometry and 2.5 inch overall length make it well suited to general-purpose production runs where rigidity and surface finish consistency are priorities. No extended reach or coolant-through features are present, keeping the design focused on compact, high-rigidity applications in conventional and high-speed machining setups.
Designed for use in standard 3/8 inch toolholders including collet chucks, end mill holders, and hydraulic chucks on vertical machining centers, horizontal machining centers, and CNC milling machines. Primary workpiece materials include steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and hardened materials.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC setup technician. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is placed in an e-stop or lockout-tagout state before changing tooling. Seat the shank fully to the recommended gauge line depth in the toolholder and verify runout with a dial indicator before beginning a cut. Do not exceed the manufacturer-rated depth of cut for the workpiece material and coating type.
