The KENNAMETAL 4040142 is an SPPXMD-style indexable drill insert in grade KCU25 solid carbide, designed for use in indexable insert drills in metal-cutting applications. The insert features a CVD-applied dual-layer coating of TiCN and Al2O3, providing wear resistance and thermal protection during interrupted and continuous drilling operations. Key dimensional specs include a 0.619-inch inscribed circle, a thickness of 0.234 inches, and a corner radius of 0.0469 inches. It is installed and replaced by machinists and toolroom technicians performing drilling operations on machining centers, CNC lathes with live tooling, and drill presses in production environments.
This insert is suited for production drilling in ferrous and non-ferrous metals where consistent hole quality and extended tool life are required. The MD chipbreaker geometry is engineered for controlled chip formation across a range of work materials. The insert size designation is 15T512, and the hole diameter measures 0.217 inches. It is sold individually but is subject to a minimum order quantity of 5 units per order. Typical applications include production machining in automotive, aerospace, and general metalworking shops.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement insert for indexable drill bodies accepting SPPX-style inserts with a 15T512 insert size designation. Confirm toolholder pocket geometry and insert size against the toolholder specification sheet before ordering.
Insert replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician with the spindle fully stopped and the machine in a locked-out, tagged-out state. Use the appropriate torx or hex key torque driver specified by the toolholder manufacturer to seat the insert clamping screw — do not overtighten by hand or with impact tools. Inspect the toolholder pocket for wear, debris, or damage before seating the new insert. Ensure the insert is fully seated and the locating surfaces are clean and free of chips before resuming operation.
