The KENNAMETAL 4034818 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision external and internal grooving operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries the R0405GMN geometry with a KCU10 grade, featuring a PVD-applied AlTiN coating that provides thermal resistance and extended tool life when cutting steel and difficult alloys. The insert delivers a 4.05 mm cutting width with a maximum depth of cut of 3.40 mm and a full-radius corner profile with a 2.02 mm corner radius. The GMN chip breaker geometry promotes controlled chip evacuation at moderate to high feed rates. This insert is appropriate for machinists and toolroom professionals running production or precision turning applications.
This insert is suited for groovng applications in both production and job-shop environments. It fits the Series A4 toolholding system and is indexed with an insert seat size of 4. Typical applications include external relief grooves, undercuts, and parting-assist operations on ferrous and non-ferrous materials. The neutral hand orientation makes it compatible with both left- and right-hand toolholder configurations. The KCU10 grade and AlTiN coating make this insert well-matched to interrupted cuts and applications where heat generation is a concern.
Designed for use in Series A4 grooving toolholders accepting insert seat size 4, per the manufacturers catalog number A4R0405M04U00GMN. Confirm toolholder pocket geometry and clamping system before installation.
Installation of carbide grooving inserts should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician with the machine fully powered down and spindle locked. Use a torque wrench appropriate for insert clamping screws and follow the toolholder manufacturers seating torque guidelines — do not overtighten, as carbide inserts are brittle and will crack under excess clamp load. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping screw for damage or debris before seating the insert. Verify the insert is fully seated and secure before resuming cutting operations.
