The KENNAMETAL 3781281 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision groove turning and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Manufactured to the A4 series standard, this insert carries the KCU10 grade designation and features an AlTiN coating applied via PVD process, delivering thermal resistance and extended tool life in a wide range of workpiece materials including steel and cast iron. The neutral hand orientation and GUP chip breaker geometry support consistent chip control and surface finish at the cutting zone. A 4.00 mm cutting width and a maximum depth of cut of 3.30 mm make this insert well suited for shallow to mid-depth grooving work where dimensional accuracy is critical.
This insert is intended for use in industrial turning applications where repeatable grooving performance is required. The A4G insert style is a common format found on grooving toolholders used in both light and medium-duty turning operations. It is typically installed by machinists and CNC operators in job shop and production environments. The positive rake geometry reduces cutting forces, making it appropriate for finishing cuts on medium-hardness materials classified under material grades C3 and C4.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement insert for A4 series grooving toolholders accepting the A4G insert style with a size 4 insert seat. Verify toolholder insert seat dimensions before installation.
Installation of grooving inserts should be performed by a qualified machinist with the machine in a powered-off and locked-out state per applicable lockout/tagout procedures. Inspect the insert seat and clamping screw for wear or debris before seating the insert. Use the appropriate torque driver for the clamping screw — refer to the toolholder manufacturer specifications for correct fastener torque. Do not exceed the rated maximum depth of cut for this insert to avoid insert fracture or premature edge failure.
