The KENNAMETAL 3749493 is a solid carbide turning insert in the TNMG431MN geometry, manufactured to both ANSI and ISO standards (ISO designation TNMG220404) as part of the KENLOC series. The insert carries a multilayer CVD coating of TiCN and Al2O3 applied via MTCVD process under the KCP10 grade, delivering high wear resistance on steel and moderate wear resistance with toughness on aluminum and non-ferrous materials. The triangular shape provides 6 usable cutting edges. Inscribed circle measures 0.5 inches, insert length is 0.8661 inches (22 millimeters), and the corner radius is 0.0156 inches (1/64 inch). This insert is installed by machinists and toolroom technicians on CNC lathes and manual turning centers.
The 3749493 is suited for roughing and medium machining operations including turning, facing, and boring. Primary workpiece materials are steel and cast iron, with secondary capability on aluminum and non-ferrous alloys. The MN chip breaker geometry handles the chip loads typical of these applications. The negative rake, negative side clearance, and chamfered-plus-honed cutting edge style contribute to edge stability under interrupted or heavy cuts. This insert is held in place by clamp or pin-type toolholders compatible with TNMG-style pockets.
Designed for use in TNMG-style insert pockets compatible with clamp or pin holding methods. Suitable for KENLOC series toolholders and other ANSI/ISO-standard TNMG431 or TNMG220404 toolholder pockets. Maximum depth of cut is 0.0492 inches (1.25 millimeters).
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians. Power down and lock out the machine before seating or indexing the insert. Ensure the toolholder pocket and clamping surfaces are clean and free of chips before placing the insert. Use the appropriate torque driver for the clamping screw per the toolholder manufacturer specifications — do not overtighten or use impact tools on clamp screws.
