The KENNAMETAL 3749290 is a TNMG543RP KCP10 grade solid carbide turning insert designed for external turning, facing, and boring operations on CNC and manual lathes. It features a multilayer MTCVD coating combining TiCN and Al2O3 layers, targeting high wear resistance on steel and cast iron workpieces. The insert carries a 60-degree triangular shape with a negative rake angle, a 0.0469 inch corner radius, and an inscribed circle of 0.625 inches. Six usable cutting edges and the RP chip breaker geometry make this insert well suited for roughing and medium machining passes where chip control and edge life are priorities.
The 3749290 is intended for production and job shop environments where steel and cast iron are the primary workpiece materials. The KCP10 grade provides high wear resistance in steel (P-class) applications and moderate wear resistance with added toughness in aluminum and non-ferrous (N-class) applications. The RP chip breaker geometry handles variable depth-of-cut conditions commonly encountered during roughing and medium finishing cycles on turning centers. It is held in place by clamp or pin style toolholders compatible with the KENLOC series.
Designed for use in KENLOC series toolholders accepting TNMG-style inserts with a 0.25 inch insert thickness, 0.625 inch inscribed circle, and clamp or pin holding methods. Conforms to ANSI insert code TNMG543 and ISO insert code TNMG270612.
Installation is performed by machinist or toolroom personnel on a powered-down machine with all axes at rest and spindle locked before changing inserts. Seat the insert fully against the pocket locating surfaces before tightening the clamp or pin to avoid edge chipping from improper seating. Index to a fresh cutting edge when visible wear or surface finish degradation occurs rather than running edges to failure. Dispose of used carbide inserts in accordance with applicable shop and local regulations for metallic cutting tool waste.
