The KENNAMETAL 3744978 is a solid carbide turning insert designed for precision metal removal in CNC and manual turning operations. Manufactured to ANSI insert code CCMT432 and ISO code CCMT120408, it features an 80-degree diamond (rhombic) shape with a positive rake angle of 12 degrees and a 7-degree relief angle. The insert carries a PVD-applied AlTiN coating under the KCU10 grade, delivering high wear resistance across a broad range of workpiece materials. With an inscribed circle of 0.5 inches and a corner radius of 0.03125 inches, it is sized for medium to roughing passes on turning, facing, and boring operations. Licensed machinists and CNC operators install this insert in compatible screw-on toolholders.
This insert is rated for use on stainless steel, superalloys, titanium, steel, cast iron, aluminum, and non-ferrous materials, corresponding to ISO material codes P, M, K, N, S, and H. The MP chip breaker geometry supports both roughing and medium machining applications, making it a versatile choice for job shops and production environments running a variety of workpiece materials. It is a neutral-hand insert, usable in standard right- or left-hand toolholder configurations that accept CCMT-style screw-on inserts. Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC operators. Power down the machine and engage the spindle lock before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torx or hex key to seat the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specification; do not overtighten, as this can fracture the carbide body. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping screw for wear or debris before seating a new insert.
