The KENNAMETAL 3656450 is a single-tipped polycrystalline diamond (PCD) turning insert designed for high-speed machining of non-ferrous metals and aluminum. Carrying the ANSI insert code CNGA432 and ISO code CNGA120408, it belongs to the KENLOC series and is offered in grade KD1425, which delivers high to moderate wear resistance with adequate toughness for demanding finishing and semi-finishing passes. The insert features an 80-degree diamond (rhombic) shape, a 0.5 inch inscribed circle, a 3/16 inch thickness, and a 1/32 inch corner radius. The flat-top chip breaker geometry and sharp cutting edge style suit applications requiring tight tolerances and excellent surface finish on soft, abrasive, or high-conductivity materials.
This insert is intended for turning, facing, and boring operations on non-ferrous metals, including aluminum alloys, copper, brass, and similar materials classified under material grades N05 and N10. It is best suited for CNC lathes and turning centers running high surface speeds where conventional carbide inserts wear prematurely. The CNGA style with negative rake and negative side clearance fits standard KENLOC-style toolholders that accept clamp-and-pin holding methods. Maximum depth of cut is 1.25 mm (0.0492 inch). The uncoated, bright PCD cutting face is the primary wear surface and should not be used on ferrous metals, as carbon migration into iron-based materials will degrade the PCD edge rapidly.
Designed for use in KENLOC-series toolholders that accept CNGA-style inserts with clamp-and-pin holding. Suitable for turning, facing, and boring applications on non-ferrous metals per material grade designations N05 and N10. Not compatible with ferrous workpiece materials.
Installation is performed by a machinist or tooling technician on a powered-off, locked-out CNC lathe or turning center. Seat the insert fully into the KENLOC pocket before tightening the clamp to ensure proper contact with the locating pin. Inspect the pocket for chips or debris before seating, as contamination under a PCD insert can cause edge fracture on first contact. PCD inserts are brittle under impact — avoid interrupted cuts, scaled surfaces, or any ferrous workpiece material.
