The KENNAMETAL 3397243 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for external grooving and turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. The insert carries the KC5010 manufacturer grade with a PVD-applied AlTiN coating, which provides thermal resistance and wear protection in demanding cutting conditions. It delivers a 1.5 mm cutting width and a maximum depth of cut of 4.06 mm, making it well suited for precision grooving in steel, alloy steel, and similar workpiece materials rated C3 and C4. A clamp-style holding method secures the insert firmly in compatible Top Notch toolholders. Installation and use require a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician.
This insert fits into the Top Notch series tooling system and is intended for metric-measurement applications. Its right-hand orientation specifies the cutting direction and dictates toolholder selection. The NGD insert style and 2M150 insert size designate compatible clamping blocks and toolholders within the Top Notch platform. Typical applications include grooving operations on ferrous and hardened materials where PVD-coated carbide grades perform reliably. This insert is a single-use, non-multi-use style and does not feature a full radius nose — the corner radius is 0.19 mm. The K chip breaker geometry is suited for controlled chip formation in medium-depth grooving passes.
Designed for use with KENNAMETAL Top Notch series clamping toolholders accepting NGD-style inserts in the 2M150 insert size. Material grades C3 and C4 indicate suitability for steel and alloy steel workpiece materials.
Insert replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist with the spindle fully stopped and machine power isolated per shop lockout-tagout procedures. Use the appropriate torque wrench and clamp screw specified by the toolholder manufacturer — do not overtighten, as carbide inserts are brittle and can fracture. Inspect the clamp, shim, and seat for wear or debris before seating the new insert. Verify correct insert orientation before resuming cutting operations.
