The KENNAMETAL 3331044 is a heavy metal indexable boring bar designed for precision internal turning operations on CNC lathes and machining centers. Built on the L-SCLP toolholder style, it accepts CP-style inserts secured by screw clamping, providing rigid, repeatable insert positioning. The shank measures 5/8 inches in diameter with an overall length of 7.992 inches. A minimum bore diameter of 0.77 inches and a maximum bore depth of 1.03 inches define its working envelope. Internal coolant delivery through a 0.156-inch coolant hole helps evacuate chips and control heat in deep-bore applications. This bar is installed by machinists and tooling specialists in production and job-shop environments.
This boring bar is suited for right-hand internal turning on lathes where tight bore tolerances and finish quality are required. The -5 degree lead angle and neutral rake geometry support consistent chip formation across a range of ferrous and non-ferrous workpiece materials. The heavy metal body provides significantly higher vibration damping compared to standard steel shanks, making it well-suited for longer reach boring where chatter is a concern. Typical applications include finishing and semi-finishing of bored holes in medium to high production environments.
Designed to accept CP-style indexable inserts with a 1/4-inch inscribed circle and 3/32-inch insert thickness, consistent with L-SCLP toolholder system requirements.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following the machine tool builder guidelines for boring bar setup and overhang limits. Ensure the machine spindle and turret are fully powered down and locked out before mounting or removing the toolholder. Use calibrated torque tools when tightening the insert clamping screw to avoid insert seat damage. Verify bore alignment and runout with a dial indicator before taking the first cut.
