The KENNAMETAL 2983278 is a solid carbide milling insert carrying ISO designation EDCT140408PDERLD and manufacturer grade KC522M. This parallelogram-shaped, single-sided insert features a TiAlN coating applied via PVD process, delivering wear resistance and thermal stability during interrupted and continuous milling operations. It provides 2 cutting edges, a positive rake geometry, a 15-degree relief angle, and a honed cutting edge style for clean entry into the workpiece. At 0.177 inches thick and 0.3307 inches inscribed circle diameter, with a 1/32-inch corner radius, it is sized for the Mill 1-14 cutter series. Licensed machinists and CNC mill operators install this insert in production and job-shop environments.
This insert is designed for right-hand milling operations and is suited for use across a broad range of workpiece materials including steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium. The LD chip breaker geometry promotes controlled chip formation across these material groups. It is screw-held in the cutter body, making indexing straightforward. Typical applications include face milling, shoulder milling, and profile milling on CNC machining centers in both roughing and semi-finishing passes where material grades P, M, K, and S are encountered.
Designed for use with the Kennametal Mill 1-14 cutter series. ANSI code EC1408ELD. ISO code EDCT140408PDERLD. Insert size code 1408. Consult the cutter body documentation to confirm pocket geometry and screw specification before installing.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. Always de-energize and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the correct Torx or hex key specified by the cutter body manufacturer to seat the clamping screw to proper engagement — do not over-torque. Inspect the insert pocket seating surface for chips or debris before seating the new insert to ensure full contact and accurate positioning.
