The KENNAMETAL 2658445 is a single-end roughing end mill designed for aggressive material removal in milling operations. Built from micrograin solid carbide, it offers the rigidity and edge retention required for high-feed roughing passes in ferrous and non-ferrous metals. The 1/2-inch diameter tool features three flutes with an extra-coarse pitch and a high helix angle, promoting efficient chip evacuation and reducing heat buildup at the cutting edge. The bright, uncoated finish is well suited for applications where coating interaction with the workpiece material is a concern. Weighing 0.3 pounds, this end mill is a standard-reach tool installed by machinists and tool-and-die professionals on vertical and horizontal CNC machining centers.
This end mill is used in production and job-shop environments for roughing slots, pockets, and profiles in a variety of materials. The extra-coarse pitch and three-flute geometry reduce cutting forces compared to higher-flute-count tools, making it appropriate for setups with moderate machine rigidity or when working with tough alloys that benefit from aggressive chip clearing. The 1-inch length of cut and 3-inch overall length suit standard depth-of-cut roughing passes without extended-reach tooling requirements. Designed as a direct-fit roughing end mill for use with any 1/2-inch bore collet chuck, end mill holder, or shrink-fit toolholder on vertical or horizontal CNC machining centers and manual knee mills.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists following standard toolholder torque and runout procedures for the specific toolholder type in use. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine control is placed in an safe state before changing tooling. Verify shank engagement depth meets the toolholder manufacturer minimum before tightening. Inspect the collet or holder bore for chips or damage prior to seating the tool.
