The KENNAMETAL 2649378 is a screw machine length drill bit engineered for high-performance drilling in ferrous materials. Built from solid carbide and coated with a multilayer TiAlN finish, it delivers extended tool life and heat resistance in demanding production environments. The bit measures 7/16 inches (0.4375 inches) in diameter with a 140-degree split-point angle for fast, accurate starts with minimal walking. Overall length is 4.0157 inches, and the two-flute regular spiral design promotes efficient chip evacuation. Coolant-through capability supports high-speed, deep-hole applications. This bit is intended for use by machinists, toolroom technicians, and production drilling operations.
The 2649378 is suited for drilling cast iron and steel in screw machine, CNC, and manual drill press setups. Its stub-length profile provides added rigidity in close-clearance fixtures and turret applications. The web-thinned, parallel-web geometry reduces thrust load and improves entry performance in hard or abrasive ferrous stock. The straight cylindrical shank with a 0.4724-inch shank diameter fits standard collets and drill chucks across a wide range of machine spindles. Maximum recommended drilling depth is 1.5750 inches.
Designed for drilling cast iron and steel workpieces. Fits standard drill chucks and collets accepting a 0.4724-inch straight shank. Part of Kennametal Series B976 screw machine length drills. Diameter tolerance is +0.007 to +0.025 mm, consistent with DIN 6537K.
This tooling should be installed and operated by qualified machinists familiar with carbide cutting tools and their handling requirements. Ensure the machine spindle, collet, or chuck is clean and properly torqued before use. Carbide tooling is brittle and susceptible to chipping from interrupted cuts, side loads, or improper runout — verify tool runout is within machine tolerances before production drilling. Follow applicable shop safety standards and machine manufacturer guidelines for speeds and feeds when drilling cast iron or steel with carbide tooling.
