The KENNAMETAL 2499847 is a solid carbide replaceable tip drill from the KSEM series, designed for precision hole-making in steel and cast iron. The tip carries the KSEM0641HPG ISO designation and is manufactured to the KC7315 grade using a fine-grain carbide substrate with a PVD-applied TiAlN coating. Cutting diameter is 16.27mm (0.6405 inches), and the 140-degree drill point angle suits general-purpose entry and breakthrough in ferrous materials. The HPG insert geometry and helical flute design work together to manage chip evacuation while the clamp-style insert seat allows repeatable tip indexing without scrapping the drill body.
This drill is suited for production and job-shop environments where drilling into steel or cast iron is routine. The KSEM platform supports inclined-surface entry, stacked-plate drilling, and through-coolant or MQL (Minimum Quantity Lubricant) delivery, making it practical across machining centers, CNC turning centers with live tooling, and dedicated drilling machines. The two-flute, two-margin configuration is appropriate for maintaining hole straightness in ferrous alloys. The replaceable tip design reduces tooling cost per hole compared to solid round tools that require full replacement on wear.
Designed for use with KSEM series drill bodies accepting insert seat size 1. Primary workpiece materials are steel (ISO material code P) and cast iron (ISO material code K). Compatible with machining setups supporting through-coolant or MQL delivery.
Installation of replaceable carbide tips should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician following the drill body manufacturer torque and clamping procedures for the KSEM seat. Ensure the insert seat is clean and free of chips or burrs before seating the tip - contamination under the tip will cause runout and premature tip failure. Confirm through-coolant connections are secure before operation. Follow your machine tool and facility safety protocols when changing cutting inserts, including machine lockout where required.
