The KENNAMETAL 2438408 is a solid carbide grooving insert in the Top Notch series, designed for external grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries a TiAlN coating applied via PVD process, which improves wear resistance and thermal stability during interrupted cuts and high-speed steel removal. The insert style is NG with a cutting width of 3.18 mm (0.1252 inches) and a maximum depth of cut of 3.81 mm (0.1500 inches). The neutral rake geometry and right-hand orientation make it suited for conventional grooving tool holders in the Top Notch system. Machinist grade KC5025 is a coated carbide grade targeting steel and cast iron applications.
This insert is used in production and job-shop turning environments where consistent groove width and depth control are required. Typical applications include grooving for snap rings, O-ring grooves, and undercuts on steel and cast iron workpieces. The insert fits Top Notch series grooving tool holders and blade-style tooling systems that accept NG-style inserts. It is installed by qualified machinists and CNC operators in metalworking shops. The 0.19 mm corner radius and 55-degree included angle support precise groove profiling without full-radius geometry.
Designed for use with Top Notch series grooving tool holders and blade-style systems accepting NG-style inserts. The MSC and manufacturer cross-reference number for this insert style is NG3125R/L.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator with the machine powered down and spindle fully stopped before insert indexing or replacement. Use the appropriate torque wrench and insert-clamping hardware specified for the Top Notch tool holder to secure the insert without over-tightening. Verify cutting width and depth-of-cut settings against the workpiece drawing before running the first part. Follow all shop-floor lockout and tagout procedures per applicable safety standards before servicing tooling.
