The KENNAMETAL 2383591 is a solid carbide milling insert in the SDCT series, ISO code SDCT120404PDFRLE, designed for high-performance milling of non-ferrous metals. The insert features a Titanium Diboride (TiB2) coating applied via PVD process, which provides a low-friction surface well suited to aluminum, copper, and other non-ferrous workpiece materials. Key dimensions include a 0.5000-inch inscribed circle, 3/16-inch (0.1875-inch) thickness, and a 1/64-inch (0.0157-inch) corner radius. The square insert geometry carries a 90-degree included angle, a 15-degree relief angle, and a 20-degree rake angle with an LE chip breaker. Installation is performed by licensed machinists and tooling specialists using screw-style insert holding.
This insert is intended for milling applications where the primary workpiece material is non-ferrous metal, classified under material application code N. The SDCT series geometry and LE chip breaker combination is well matched to finishing and semi-finishing cuts in aluminum alloys and similar materials. The right-hand cutting orientation and PVD TiB2 coating help maintain sharp edges and reduce built-up edge in sticky non-ferrous alloys. Insert replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist with the machine fully powered down and spindle locked before removing or seating inserts. Use the appropriate Torx or hex key as specified by the toolholder manufacturer for the clamping screw — do not overtighten, as this can fracture the carbide substrate. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surfaces for chips or debris before installing a new insert. Confirm insert orientation matches the right-hand cutting direction required by the toolholder setup.
