The KENNAMETAL 2273318 is a screw machine length solid carbide drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in demanding production environments. Built to DIN 6537K specification, this bit features a 140-degree split point, TiAlN coating, and web-thinned geometry that reduces thrust force and improves chip evacuation. At 3.10 mm in diameter with a straight cylindrical shank, it is engineered for precision hole-making in cast iron and steel. The Dynapoint High Performance grade carbide substrate and KC7315 material grade provide the edge retention and heat resistance required for high-speed CNC drilling operations. Machinists and toolroom technicians working with automated screw machines, CNC lathes, and machining centers are the primary installers of this bit.
This drill bit is suited for short-hole drilling applications in ferrous metals, specifically cast iron and steel workpieces. The screw machine length format — shorter overall length for increased rigidity — makes it well-matched for high-feed-rate production drilling where runout control and hole position accuracy are critical. The 2-flute regular spiral design handles chip clearing in through-hole and shallow blind-hole applications. A maximum drilling depth of 14.00 mm keeps this bit in its optimal performance range without the need for peck cycles in most applications.
Designed as a DIN 6537K screw machine length drill bit in the B966A series, this bit is compatible with standard straight-shank toolholders accepting a 6.00 mm shank diameter. Primary workpiece materials are cast iron and steel.
Installation and tool changes should be performed with the machine in a locked-out, de-energized state per applicable machine-guarding and lockout/tagout procedures. Seat the straight shank fully in the collet or hydraulic holder and verify runout with a dial indicator before cutting. Solid carbide tooling is brittle — avoid side loading, interrupted cuts beyond the tool's rated capacity, or re-chucking with contaminated bore surfaces. Consult the machine tool manufacturer and Kennametal feed-and-speed tables for appropriate cutting parameters for the specific workpiece material and machine spindle.
