The KENNAMETAL 2042790 is a solid carbide milling insert with ISO designation APPT1604PDERGD, manufactured to the KC520M grade and PVD-coated with TiAlN for wear resistance in demanding cutting applications. The insert features a parallelogram shape with an 85-degree included angle, an 11-degree relief angle, and a 15-degree rake angle. At 0.2071 inches thick and 0.3713 inches wide, it uses a screw-holding method and is supplied as a right-hand insert. The GD chip breaker geometry is optimized for controlled chip formation. Licensed HVAC and machining technicians, tooling specialists, and CNC operators working with cast iron components are the primary installers and users of this insert.
This insert is designed for milling applications where the primary workpiece material is cast iron, classified under material grade C1 and C2 and ISO material code K. It fits insert size code 1604 within the APPT series and is suited for face milling, shoulder milling, and similar operations requiring consistent geometry and reliable edge performance in gray iron, ductile iron, and similar cast iron alloys. The right-hand orientation and screw-mount design make it compatible with standard APPT-series toolholders used in vertical and horizontal machining centers.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement insert for APPT-series milling toolholders accepting size 1604 inserts with screw-mount retention. Primary application is cast iron workpiece material (ISO K group, material grades C1 and C2).
Insert installation and indexing should be performed by a qualified CNC machinist or tooling technician with the machine powered down and locked out per applicable safety procedures. Use the correct Torx or hex key as specified by the toolholder manufacturer when seating the clamping screw — do not overtighten, as this can crack the carbide substrate. Inspect the toolholder pocket for debris or damage before seating each insert. Follow the toolholder manufacturer's recommended torque procedure and verify runout after indexing.
