The KENNAMETAL 1952778 is a solid carbide grooving insert with a TiAlN coating applied via PVD process, designed for precision external grooving operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Carrying the KC5010 manufacturer grade and GMP chip breaker geometry, it delivers a 4 mm cutting width and a maximum depth of cut of 3.4 mm. The full-radius profile with a corner radius of 2 mm (0.0787 inches) and a positive rake angle promote smooth chip evacuation and reduced cutting forces. Machinists and CNC turning technicians install this insert in compatible A4-series toolholders for groove turning in steel, cast iron, and similar C3/C4 material grades.
This insert is suited for metric-measurement grooving applications in both production and job-shop turning environments. The neutral hand orientation allows use in standard right-hand or left-hand tooling setups without repositioning the holder. Its GMP chip breaker is optimized for controlled chip formation at moderate feed rates across a depth-of-cut range of 3 mm to 4 mm, making it a practical choice for external groove finishing and profiling operations where dimensional consistency is required. Installation is performed by qualified machinists familiar with indexable insert tooling.
Designed for use in A4-series grooving toolholders accepting insert seat size 4 and insert style R (catalog reference A4R0400M04P00GMP). Suitable for workpiece materials classified under C3 and C4 material grades.
This insert is installed by a qualified machinist or CNC turning technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the correct torque wrench and insert clamp hardware specified for the A4-series toolholder — do not overtighten the clamping screw. Inspect the insert seat and clamp for chips or debris before seating the new insert to ensure proper contact and prevent premature edge failure.
