The KENNAMETAL 1886490 is a left-hand SDJC-style indexable turning toolholder designed for precision external turning operations on CNC and manual lathes. It features a 0-degree neutral rake angle, which provides a stable cutting geometry suited to a wide range of workpiece materials. The holder uses a screw-on insert clamping method for secure, repeatable indexing and accepts DC..32.5. series inserts with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle. The shank measures 0.5 inches wide by 0.5 inches tall and has an overall length of 6 inches. It is constructed from steel for rigidity and long service life. Licensed machinists and CNC lathe operators are the primary installers of this toolholder.
This toolholder is suited for external turning applications in both production and job-shop environments. The left-hand orientation positions the cutting edge for specific approach directions on the workpiece, commonly used when feeding from the chuck toward the tailstock or in applications requiring the mirror geometry of a standard right-hand holder. The 3-degree lead angle assists with chip flow and surface finish in general-purpose turning. The screw-on clamping system allows fast insert changes without disturbing the tool setup, reducing downtime during high-volume runs. No coolant-through capability is present on this holder, so external coolant delivery should be planned accordingly.

Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC setup technicians. The machine spindle must be stopped and the turret or toolpost fully de-energized before mounting or removing the toolholder. Ensure the shank bore and clamping surfaces are clean and free of chips before seating. Use the appropriate screw torque specified in the machine tool manual for the toolpost or turret pocket — do not over-clamp, as this can distort the shank and affect cutting geometry.
