The KENNAMETAL 1871172 is a solid carbide turning insert with ANSI designation DCMT3252UF and ISO designation DCMT11T308, finished with a PVD-applied TiAlN coating. The insert features a 55-degree diamond (rhombic) shape, a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, and a 1/32-inch corner radius with a honed cutting edge style. The UF chip breaker is optimized for finishing operations, delivering tight surface finishes and controlled chip flow. Holding method is screw-on, and insert hand is neutral. With positive rake and positive side clearance, this insert is designed for high wear resistance across a range of workpiece materials. Licensed machinists and CNC turning technicians install this insert on compatible screw-on toolholders for precision lathe work.
This insert is suited for external turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring operations in production and job-shop environments. Primary workpiece materials include steel, stainless steel, and superalloys and titanium. The KC5010 grade also covers cast iron and aluminum applications where high wear resistance to moderate toughness is required. The UF chip breaker geometry makes it particularly effective in light finishing passes where dimensional accuracy and surface finish are critical. It complies with ANSI and ISO insert standards.
Designed as a screw-on replacement insert conforming to ANSI insert code DCMT3252 and ISO insert code DCMT11T308. Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Power down and de-energize all machine spindles before changing inserts. Use the manufacturer-specified torque wrench and insert screw when seating the insert to avoid pocket damage or insert cracking. Inspect the toolholder pocket for wear, debris, or damage before seating a new insert, as pocket condition directly affects insert performance and dimensional accuracy.
