The KENNAMETAL 1871168 is a solid carbide turning insert with ANSI designation CPMT3251UF and ISO designation CPMT09T304, finished in a PVD-applied TiAlN coating under the KC5010 grade. It features an 80-degree diamond (rhombic) shape with a positive rake angle of 5 degrees and an 11-degree relief angle. The insert measures 9.67 mm (approximately 0.381 inches) in length with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle and a 1/64-inch corner radius. The UF chip breaker geometry is optimized for finishing operations. It is held in place via a screw-on mounting method and is used primarily by machinists and CNC turning professionals on lathes and turning centers.
This insert is designed for finishing cuts in turning, facing, and boring operations. The KC5010 grade is engineered for high wear resistance with moderate toughness, making it well suited for steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium workpieces. Positive side clearance and a honed cutting edge style reduce cutting forces and help maintain surface finish quality on demanding materials. It delivers two cutting edges per insert, and its neutral hand orientation gives it broad applicability across standard toolholders configured for CPMT-style inserts.
Designed for use in CPMT-style screw-on turning toolholders accepting a 3/8-inch inscribed circle insert. Compatible with ANSI size code 3251 and ISO size code 09T304 toolholder pockets. Suitable for turning, facing, and boring applications on steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum, superalloys, and titanium workpieces per primary workpiece material codes P, M, K, N, and S.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Always power down and lock out the machine before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torque wrench and manufacturer-specified screw for the CPMT screw-on seat to avoid seat damage or insert movement during cutting. Inspect the toolholder pocket and clamping screw for wear or damage before seating a new insert.
