The KENNAMETAL 1871091 is a solid carbide turning insert in the TCMT32505LF geometry, coated with TiAlN via a PVD process and graded KC5010. The triangular insert profile delivers three usable cutting edges and is designed for finishing and light machining applications on steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and cast iron. It features a positive rake angle of 5 degrees and a honed cutting edge style for controlled chip formation. The insert mounts via a screw-on holding method and is classified as neutral hand, making it compatible with a wide range of right- and left-hand tooling systems. Licensed machinists, CNC operators, and production turning specialists are the primary installers.
This insert is well-suited for external turning, facing, and boring operations in both production and job-shop environments. The LF chip breaker geometry is optimized for finishing cuts at light depths of cut, with a maximum depth of cut of 0.0492 inches (1.25 mm). Its TiAlN PVD coating provides high wear resistance across steel (P), stainless steel (M), and cast iron (K) material groups, as well as moderate performance on aluminum and non-ferrous materials (N) and superalloys and titanium (S). The KC5010 grade is engineered for high to moderate wear resistance paired with adequate toughness for interrupted or variable-feed conditions.
Conforms to ANSI insert code TCMT32505 and ISO insert code TCMT16T302, fitting standard TCMT screw-on toolholders designed for 3/8-inch inscribed circle triangular inserts with a clearance code C and tolerance code M.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing the insert. Use the appropriate Torx or hex key to secure the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specification. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before seating the new insert to ensure proper contact and avoid premature edge failure.
