The KENNAMETAL 1871084 is a solid carbide turning insert carrying the ANSI designation SCMT432LF and ISO designation SCMT120408. Coated with TiAlN via a PVD process under the KC5010 grade, this insert delivers high wear resistance with a balance of toughness suited to steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and superalloy machining operations. The LF chip breaker geometry is engineered for finishing and light machining passes, producing tight tolerances and smooth surface finishes. The insert features a positive rake angle of 5 degrees, a 90-degree square shape, a 0.5000-inch inscribed circle, a 0.03125-inch corner radius, and a 0.1875-inch thickness. It is held in place via a screw-on mounting method and carries a neutral hand orientation. Four cutting edges are available per insert.
This insert is designed for turning, facing, and boring applications on CNC lathes and turning centers handling steel (P), stainless steel (M), cast iron (K), aluminum and non-ferrous materials (N), and superalloys and titanium (S). The LF finishing geometry performs best at light depths of cut, with a maximum recommended depth of cut of 0.0492 inches (1.25 mm), making it suitable for final-pass work where dimensional accuracy and surface finish are priorities. The positive side clearance and honed cutting edge style reduce cutting forces and extend tool life in demanding production environments.
Designed for use in screw-on style SCMT-compatible turning toolholders conforming to ANSI and ISO standards for square inserts with a 0.5000-inch inscribed circle and 7-degree relief angle. Verify toolholder pocket specifications against ANSI size code 432 and ISO size code 120408 before installation.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the machine powered down, spindle locked, and all stored energy released before accessing the turret or toolpost. Use the appropriate torx or hex key as specified by the toolholder manufacturer to seat the clamping screw to the recommended torque range for SCMT screw-on inserts. Inspect the toolholder pocket and locating surfaces for chips or wear before seating the new insert. Do not exceed the maximum depth of cut specification for the LF geometry, as heavy interrupted cuts can cause premature edge fracture.
