The KENNAMETAL 1871083 is a solid carbide turning insert in the SCMT431LF configuration, coated with TiAlN via a PVD process under the KC5010 manufacturer grade. It features a 90-degree square insert shape, a 0.5-inch inscribed circle, a 0.0156-inch corner radius, and a 3/16-inch thickness. The positive rake angle and honed cutting edge make this insert optimized for finishing and light machining operations on steel, stainless steel, and superalloys. Four usable cutting edges are available per insert. It is held in place by a screw-on mounting method, making it a standard choice for indexable turning toolholders used by CNC machinists and turning center operators.
This insert is designed for turning, facing, and boring operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Its KC5010 grade delivers high wear resistance with moderate toughness, making it well suited for finishing passes on steel and stainless steel workpieces. It also performs in cast iron and aluminum applications. The LF chip breaker geometry targets finishing and light machining cuts, with a maximum depth of cut of 0.0492 inches (1.25 mm). Machinists running precision diameter work or tight-tolerance facing operations will find this insert grade and geometry combination appropriate for consistent surface finish results.
Designed for use in screw-on style indexable turning toolholders that accept SCMT431 (ANSI) or SCMT120404 (ISO) insert geometry. Suitable for multi-use applications including turning, facing, and boring. Primary workpiece materials include steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum, superalloys, and titanium per material codes P, M, K, N, and S.
Installation is performed by a qualified CNC machinist or toolroom technician. Power down and lock out the machine before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the correct torque wrench and manufacturer-specified insert screw to seat the insert properly in the pocket — do not overtighten, as this can crack the carbide. Inspect the insert pocket for chips or debris before seating a new cutting edge.
