The KENNAMETAL 1870987 is a solid carbide turning insert designed for precision metal removal on CNC lathes and turning centers. Designated CCMT431LF in the ISO/ANSI insert identification system, it carries a PVD-applied TiAlN coating under the KC5010 manufacturer grade. This coating provides thermal resistance and wear performance suited to demanding cutting conditions. The insert features a neutral hand orientation, a positive rake angle of 5 degrees, a 7-degree relief angle, and an LF chip breaker geometry. The cutting edge is honed for edge stability. With 2 cutting edges per insert, it delivers consistent performance across multiple setups. Licensed machinists, CNC operators, and toolroom technicians specify this insert for turning, facing, and boring operations.
This insert is intended for machining steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium, corresponding to ISO material codes P, M, and S. The LF chip breaker geometry is engineered for finishing and light-to-medium roughing passes where controlled chip formation is critical. Its screw-on holding method suits standard CCMT-style toolholders commonly found in production turning environments, both in job shops and high-volume manufacturing cells. The insert is rated for a maximum depth of cut of 1.25 mm (0.0492 inches), making it best suited for finishing passes and light stock removal on the workpiece materials listed.
Designed for use in standard screw-on CCMT-style toolholders conforming to ANSI and ISO standards for CCMT431 inserts. Compatible with applications involving steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium workpiece materials (ISO codes P, M, S). Material grades C3 and C4 apply.
Installation is performed by CNC machinists or toolroom technicians using standard insert seating procedures for screw-on CCMT toolholders. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Seat the insert fully against the toolholder pocket and tighten the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer specification — do not overtighten, as carbide inserts are brittle and susceptible to fracture under uneven clamping loads. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before installation to ensure accurate edge positioning.
