The KENNAMETAL 1870986 is a CCMT3252LF-style solid carbide turning insert coated with TiAlN via a PVD process and manufactured in the KC5010 grade. Designed for screw-on toolholders, this neutral-hand insert features an 80-degree diamond shape with a positive rake angle of 5 degrees and a honed cutting edge. At 9.67 mm in length with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle and a 1/32-inch corner radius, it delivers controlled chip formation through the LF chip breaker geometry. Two cutting edges are available per insert. Machinists and CNC operators working in high-production turning environments rely on this insert for consistent tool life on difficult-to-machine materials.
This insert is engineered for turning, facing, and boring operations on steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium. The TiAlN PVD coating provides thermal resistance and wear protection suited to these primary workpiece material groups. The LF chip breaker geometry promotes efficient chip evacuation during light-to-moderate depth-of-cut passes, with a maximum depth of cut of 0.0492 inch (1.25 mm). It is well-suited for both roughing approaches near that limit and precision finishing passes where edge integrity is critical. The KC5010 grade is a Kennametal designation optimized for these ISO material groups.
Designed for use in screw-on CCMT-style toolholders accepting a 3/8-inch inscribed circle insert. Compatible with turning, facing, and boring applications on primary workpiece materials coded P (steel), M (stainless steel), and S (superalloys and titanium), as well as secondary material codes N, P, and S. Meets ANSI and ISO insert standards.
Installation is performed by machinists or CNC setup technicians using the appropriate screw-on toolholder and insert screw torqued to the toolholder manufacturer specification. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the toolholder is secure in the turret before seating or rotating the insert. Inspect the insert pocket for chips or debris before installation to ensure proper seating and avoid insert rocking. Rotate to the second cutting edge only after the first edge shows wear; do not reuse edges that show chipping or thermal cracking.
