The KENNAMETAL 1870036 is a VBMT2205LF KT315 grade cermet turning insert designed for precision metal removal in CNC and manual turning applications. It features a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) insert shape with a positive rake and positive side clearance, making it well suited for light finishing cuts and fine surface finishes. The insert carries a multilayer PVD coating of TiN/TiCN/TiN for high wear resistance across steel, stainless steel, and cast iron workpiece materials. With a 0.0079 inch corner radius and a honed cutting edge, this insert delivers consistent results at tight tolerances. Installation is via screw-on holding method. The insert ships individually but must be ordered in multiples of 5.
This insert is intended for turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring operations on steel (P), stainless steel (M), and cast iron (K) workpiece materials where high wear resistance and a fine finish are the priority. The LF chip breaker geometry is optimized for finishing and light machining passes, making it appropriate for tight-tolerance finishing work on CNC lathes in both job shop and production environments. It conforms to ANSI insert code VBMT2205 and ISO insert code VBMT110302, allowing straightforward replacement in toolholders spec'd to either standard.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement insert conforming to ANSI insert code VBMT2205 and ISO insert code VBMT110302. Compatible with screw-on style VBMT toolholders specifying a 0.25 inch inscribed circle, 0.125 inch insert thickness, and B tolerance/M clearance designation. Suitable for primary workpiece materials coded P (steel), M (stainless steel), and K (cast iron) per ISO material classification.
This insert is installed and replaced by a machinist or CNC toolroom technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Seat the insert fully against the toolholder pocket locating surfaces before tightening the clamp screw to avoid seating errors that affect tool height and runout. Do not use damaged or chipped inserts, as edge failure can compromise workpiece finish and dimensional accuracy.
