The KENNAMETAL 1868457 is a solid carbide turning insert in the SNGP431 geometry, coated with TiAlN via a PVD process and offered in the KC5010 manufacturer grade. It carries a 90-degree square shape (S) with a 0.5-inch inscribed circle, a 1/64-inch corner radius, and a 3/16-inch insert thickness. Designed for negative rake, negative side clearance operation, the insert features a honed cutting edge and is held by clamp or pin methods. With 8 available cutting edges, it delivers high value per insert on production turning, facing, and boring operations. Machinists and CNC operators working steel, stainless steel, and superalloy components will find it well-suited to medium-machining chip-breaker demands.
This insert is applied in turning, facing, and boring operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Its KC5010 grade is engineered for high wear-resistance to moderate wear-resistance and toughness across steel (P), stainless steel (M), and cast iron (K) workpiece categories, with additional applicability to aluminum and non-ferrous (N) and superalloys and titanium (S) material groups. Typical use cases include general-purpose production turning of steel and stainless components where consistent tool life and predictable wear behavior are required. Maximum depth of cut is 0.049 inches (1.25 mm).
Designed for use in KENLOC-series toolholders accepting SNGP-style inserts with a clamp or pin holding method. Conforms to ANSI insert code SNGP431 and ISO insert code SNGP120404, allowing fitment in any toolholder built to those standards. Meets ANSI and ISO dimensional standards for drop-in replacement in compatible pocket geometries.
Insert indexing and replacement is performed by qualified machinists or CNC toolroom technicians. Before servicing the toolholder, confirm the machine spindle is fully stopped and the machine is in a safe, locked-out state per shop lockout/tagout procedures. Seat the insert fully in the pocket and torque the clamp or pin fastener to the toolholder manufacturer specification - do not over-tighten, as carbide inserts are brittle and can crack under excessive clamping force. Inspect the pocket and locating surfaces for chips or debris before seating a new insert.
