The KENNAMETAL 1866756 is a solid carbide turning insert designated VBGT331LF in the KC5010 grade, designed for precision finishing and light machining operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. The insert features a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) shape with a positive rake angle and a 5-degree relief angle, producing clean, accurate cuts on demanding workpiece materials. A PVD-applied TiAlN coating provides high wear resistance while maintaining toughness across a range of cutting conditions. With a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, a 1/64-inch corner radius, and a 3/16-inch thickness, this insert is engineered for tight-tolerance finishing passes where surface finish and dimensional accuracy are critical.
This insert is suited for turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring applications in both residential and industrial production environments. Primary workpiece materials include steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium (ISO material codes P, M, K, N, S). Cast iron and aluminum are also listed as compatible workpiece materials. The LF chip breaker geometry is optimized for finishing and light machining, making this insert a fit for applications requiring controlled chip evacuation and minimal workpiece deflection. It mounts via screw-on holding method (Screw-On series), providing positive insert retention during interrupted or continuous cuts.
Conforms to ANSI insert code VBGT331 and ISO insert code VBGT160404, making it compatible with screw-on VBGT-style toolholders meeting these standards. Suitable for use on steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, titanium, and aluminum workpieces per the manufacturer grade KC5010 specifications.
Installation is performed by a machinist or CNC tooling technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or changing inserts. Use the correct Torx or hex key for the insert screw and ensure the insert pocket is clean and free of chips before seating to prevent improper contact and premature edge failure. Do not reuse a damaged or visibly worn insert, as doing so risks workpiece damage and tool crash.
