The KENNAMETAL 1866683 is a solid carbide turning insert with ANSI designation VBGT331LF and ISO code VBGT160404, manufactured to grade KC5025 with a PVD-applied TiAlN coating. The insert features a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) shape, a positive rake geometry, a 5-degree relief angle, and a honed cutting edge style. At 16.61 mm in length with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle and a 1/64-inch corner radius, this insert is designed for finishing and light machining operations. It provides moderate wear resistance and toughness across steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and non-ferrous workpiece materials, with primary suitability for stainless steel and superalloys.
This insert is intended for use in turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring applications on CNC lathes and manual turning centers in industrial machining environments. The LF chip breaker geometry targets finishing and light-stock-removal passes where tight tolerances and surface finish quality are priorities. The KC5025 grade is well suited to stainless steel and superalloy components where controlled cutting forces and edge stability matter. Installation requires a screw-on insert holding method compatible with VBGT-style toolholders. The neutral hand orientation makes it adaptable to both right-hand and left-hand toolholder setups.

Insert replacement and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician with the machine fully powered down and the spindle locked. Use the manufacturer-specified torque screwdriver or wrench for the clamp screw to avoid seat damage or insert cracking. Inspect the toolholder pocket and locating surfaces for chips or wear before seating the new insert. Follow applicable shop safety procedures and machine tool manufacturer guidelines during any tooling change.
