The KENNAMETAL 1818858 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision external grooving and turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Manufactured to the NRD3031 insert style in the Top Notch series, it features a TiAlN coating applied via PVD process for improved wear resistance and thermal stability at elevated cutting speeds. The insert is left-hand orientation with a 1.58 mm cutting width, a maximum depth of cut of 3.18 mm, and a full corner radius of 0.79 mm with a neutral rake geometry. It is installed by machinists and CNC operators performing grooving, parting, and profile turning on metal workpieces.
This insert is suited for grooving applications on steel, cast iron, and similar workpiece materials classified under material grades C3 and C4. The 55-degree included angle and neutral rake geometry make it appropriate for general-purpose grooving in both production and job-shop environments. It fits toolholders and cartridges in the Top Notch series designed for NRD-style inserts. The metric insert size designation is 3031. Typical applications include O-ring groove cutting, undercut profiling, and shallow parting operations on turned components.
Designed for use with Top Notch series toolholders and cartridges accepting NRD3031-style inserts. The MSC/Manufacturer cross-reference number is NRD3031L. Confirm toolholder compatibility against the NRD insert style and 3031 insert size before installation.
Insert seating and clamping should be performed with the machine spindle locked and all power isolated from the turning center or lathe. Use the correct torx or hex key specified by the toolholder manufacturer to achieve proper clamping torque without over-stressing the insert pocket. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping screw for wear or debris before seating a new insert. Carbide inserts are brittle — avoid impact or dropping during handling.
