The KENNAMETAL 1818856 is a solid carbide grooving insert in the Top Notch series, designed for external grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Grade KC5010 carbide with a PVD-applied TiAlN coating delivers hardness and thermal resistance suited for finishing and semi-finishing cuts in steel and cast iron. The insert features a 0.25 inch (6.35 mm) cutting width, a maximum depth of cut of 0.25 inch (6.35 mm), and a full-radius corner geometry with a 0.1252 inch (3.18 mm) corner radius. A positive 10-degree rake angle and K-style chip breaker promote controlled chip flow at the cutting edge. Right-hand orientation. Installed by machinists and CNC operators in production and job-shop environments.
This insert is suited for grooving, recessing, and face grooving operations where precise width control and repeatable depth are required. The Top Notch series uses a notch-style seating system for secure clamping and consistent edge indexing. The KC5010 grade targets applications in steel, alloy steel, and cast iron at moderate to high cutting speeds where a PVD TiAlN coating extends tool life under dry or minimal-lubrication conditions. Maximum depth of cut range is 0.20 to 0.30 inch (5.00 to 10.00 mm), making this insert appropriate for medium-depth grooving passes in typical shaft and bore work.

Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Confirm the machine spindle is fully stopped and the turret is in a safe position before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate Top Notch clamping screw torque per the toolholder manufacturer specification and verify the insert seats fully in the notch before resuming cuts. Inspect the insert seat for chips or debris that could affect seating accuracy and edge height consistency.
