The KENNAMETAL 1818766 is a solid carbide grooving insert in the Top Notch series, designed for external grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries the KC5010 grade designation and features a PVD-applied TiAlN coating for enhanced wear resistance and thermal stability at elevated cutting speeds. The insert is left-hand oriented with a 2.39 mm (0.0941 inch) cutting width and a maximum depth of cut of 3.81 mm (0.1500 inch). A positive rake angle of 10 degrees and the K chip breaker geometry promote controlled chip flow and reduce cutting forces on a range of workpiece materials.
This insert is suited for grooving and undercutting operations on steel, cast iron, and similar materials in the C3 and C4 material grade range. Typical applications include groove turning on small to medium diameter workpieces in production and job-shop environments. The Top Notch series is a widely used indexable grooving platform, and this insert is appropriate for both roughing and finishing passes within its specified depth-of-cut range. Machinists and CNC programmers working with tight tolerance groove profiles will find the fixed cutting width and corner radius geometry useful for repeatable results.
Designed for use with Top Notch series grooving toolholders that accept NG3094 style inserts. Verify toolholder hand orientation (left-hand) before installation. No specific model compatibility was provided beyond the Top Notch series designation.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the machine powered down and in a locked-out state. Seat the insert fully into the toolholder pocket and torque the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specification — do not estimate. Inspect the insert seat for chips or debris before seating, as contamination will affect insert height and groove accuracy. Replace the insert at the first sign of edge wear to avoid workpiece damage or toolholder pocket deterioration.
